Further Mathematics

A General Introduction to Further Mathematics

More Information
General Overview

Further Mathematics is a popular VCE subject, with a focus on general applications of mathematical concepts to everyday life, suited to students who prefer ‘real world’ math rather than complex topics covered in other math units. Further Mathematics provides useful preparation for further studies and employment, as it provides an introduction into data analysis and financial mathematics, both of these key skills for young adults.

Structure

Further Maths is divided into two sections: core and application modules.

The core modules include

  • data analysis
  • recursion and financial modelling

Whilst the application modules allow students to pick two of the following four modules

  • matrices
  • networks and decision mathematics
  • geometry and measurement
  • graphs and relations

End of year assessment involves two one and a half hour exams, the first comprising of multiple-choice questions and the second written response questions with students having access to calculators and a bound reference for both exams.

Difficult Topics vs Easy Topics

Typically, better-performed questions involve standard calculations and interpretations. Difficult topics include analysis of graphs, transition and communication matrix applications, and critical path analysis.

Ideal Mindset

Students undertaking Further should be consistently working on exam techniques and preparing their bound reference, as having a solid exam strategy will help students feel calm and prepared. To perform well in Further Maths, students should focus on practice questions, identifying VCAA tricks and common errors in exam questions.

Traps and Pitfalls

Due to Further Mathematics being the least difficult VCE mathematics subject, a lot of students pick the subject in hopes of getting an “easy 50” and believe that they do not need to study as much. Although the content in Further is easier than that of Specialist or Methods, the consequences for making mistakes are much higher. One mistake on the exam essentially means one mark off your study score.

Students shouldn’t become complacent and neglect studying for further as the subject requires consistent revision of topics and practice of difficult concepts.

Attention to detail

Further Mathematics relies heavily on calculator use, and specific wording for exam answers is required to attain full marks. Additionally, it is very easy to make trivial mistakes on exams. There is plenty of time for students to complete the exam, so try not to move too fast as mistakes are easily made. Make sure to read each question carefully and double-check the answers with the calculator.
